Almost always...I paint watercolor in the most traditional of ways with transparent watercolor. It's pretty basic....I use old school techniques , nothing fancy.
I exclusively use Arches paper of all textures, typically 300lb, and enjoy Winsor Newton pigments, as well as Daniel Smith. I never pay attention to brush brands but I do know how to pick out a good one!
My techniques use no inks, no brightners, no tricks...just clean fresh water with beautiful transparent washes full of pigment layed down on damp paper at just the right moment. Not to soon and not to late!
Timing is everything with transparent watercolor. There is not alot of room for mistakes or second guessing , nor the timid. It's done best with a 'seat of your pants attitude' as it will result in either a thrilling ride of your life or train wreck of a painting!" In any case, both are important to complete, as each painting is one small step forward in a journey of an artist.
